I am also wondering if I should get another estimate, or is it possible to order a part and repair it myself? I’ve done that with an appliance & saved a bunch of bucks. Sure do hate throwing it away.

If you paid close to the estimate for the camera a year ago then you’d be better off (IMO) buying a new one.
Digital cameras are a bit more complicated than an appliance. If you’re so inclined you could certainly give it a try.

My son pushed the lens closed on my sony cybershot camera and not it will not open when the power is turned on. I started to take it apart to look at it but it gets pretty intricate. A local camera shop wants at least $ 160 to take a look, maybe more for repair. does anyone have any idea if this is something i can fix by myself, and if there are parts available online? Or am i out of luck and just need to buy a new camera?

I dropped my precious cybershot at a concert and the same thing happened – the lens jammed. I took it to Wolf Camera and the said the same thing – $ 160 to just see what was wrong – then parts etc. I went to Bestbuy and looked at what a new camera cost and ended up buying it instead because my camera was 3 years old. it kills me that this is such planned obsolesce. It really depends on how much you want to save – for me the $ 75 saved on fixing didn’t match getting a brand new one with improved features. You can also call Sony and they can help you directly. They are not so nice, but you could try.

The camera lens is not working. When I switch it on the screen just shows the word ‘Access’ and doesn’t let me click pics. The Sony service people say that something is wrong with the lens assembly. The LCD screen, flash and other parts are working fine. I would like to sell the camera because repairing it would be too expensive.
