Is there a reason why Sony HDR cameras support tapes?
Question by SingingKatana: Is there a reason why Sony HDR cameras support tapes?
Do they get better quality then digital?
Best answer:
Answer by Little Dog
Digital 8 tapes record digital data. Digital 8 tape fell out of favor a few years ago.
MiniDV tapes… well, the “DV” = Digital Video.
The Sony HDR-HC series (discontinued HC1, HC3, HC5, HC7 and current HC9, FX7, FX1000 and most of the professional HVR series, including HVR-A1, Z1, Z5 and the discontinued HVR-V1) all use miniDV tape.
They are digital. The zeros and ones that make of the digital video data are similar to the zeros and ones that make up the digital video data on flash memory, hard disc drive and even DVD based camcorders.
Points of reference: the Canon ZR series and HVR series (currently available – ZR960 and HV40) consumer camcorders, GL2 prosumer, XHA1, XL2, and XLH series also shoot using miniDV tape and can record high quality standard definition DV format and most do high definition 1080i HDV format video. The Panasonic AG-DVX100 and AG-HVX200 can both do standard definition DV format to miniDV tape – and the HVX200 can also do DVCPro HD format to flash memory P2 cards. There’s a bunch more on this (like the Sony HDCAM and XDCAM series that shoot in those formats), but I digress…
Just because the storage media is tape does not mean “analog”. MiniDV tape writes low-compression digital video. The data stream is 25mbps. Currently, the best AVCHD can do in consumer cams is 24mbps. There are some tricks to increasing the video quality since video compression discards video data which results in reduced quality, but these “tricks” are generally found in higher-end camcorders – not consumer grade (most of which do only 17 mbps or less for their data stream).
There are a number of factors that go into producing good, high quality video. One of the basic “rules” is to start with the highest quality you can. If this is the only criteria you want to use, then yes, HDV format video does get “better” quality than AVCHD-compressed MTS files commonly produced by flash memory and hard disc drive consumer camcorders… But HDV is digital – so to be accurate, your question is invalid.
+++++++
Just to be clear… analog tape based camcorders would be those which use Hi8, VHS, VHS-C, Beta (but not Digital Beta) and a few others. The video information written to these tapes is not digital…
