First test with the camera. – Iris and focus are on manual. Iris is completely open the whole time. – The sky looks very choppy, and this must be due to uploading to YouTube (the image problem is not in the original nor the mpeg2 converted video files). – The kids were at least 60 metres away so the microphone is really impressive. – Had to edit to keep the license plates from showing lol – Used Premiere Pro to export to mpeg2 1920×1080 (25 fps).

I picked up a Sony PMW-EX1R from B&H in New York and spent a week testing it out all over Manhattan. This is a serious upgrade from my earlier Canon HG10 + Letus Mini combo. Handholding this beast is obviously not easy at all but I’ll be doing mostly tripod stuff with it anyway. Here, and in future footage, the EX1R is set to fully manual. There is a lot to learn but that’s the whole idea behind getting this camcorder in the first place . Everything is unedited and ungraded. It’ll show you how a novice does with something this complex. Budapest, Danube boat trip – HD 1080p Test Footage – Panasonic AG-HPX171E (HPX170) -

Test footage taken on the Panasonic HPX171E, P2 HD camcorder – Recorded in ‘film cam’ setting, in DVCPro HD at 1080i 50p and converted to 1080p 25p using FCP (Colour, balance etc, is as recorded with no adjustment) – All shot handheld with OIS on. – I believe the ‘film’ look has been achieved through conversion (ie. from timeline direct to compressor in FCP to give the youtube output file of 330mb) – The original was a bit smooth and too much like tv video – - Feel free to leave comments -

At the Bench with Canon’s XF305 Camcorder

Canon’s new XF305 compact camcorder features a unibody design, incorporating an 18X zoom lens. The focus function button on the lens barrel can activate full manual focus or auto focus. There is also a digital zoom function that can be triggered by the two magnification buttons built into the camera body. Additionally, the auto focus function on this camera is one of the best I have seen — it is center-weighted, meaning that the camera looks to the center of the frame to determine focus. The XF305 also boasts some pretty impressive stats: its highest recording resolution is 1920×1080 at 50Mbps, and footage is captured in MPEG-2 codec in LongGOP format with 4:2:2 color sampling. HD-SDI, SD-SDI and composite outputs are available as well. Watch my video to learn more about this versatile new camera.
