How big of a difference will I see on a servo focus vs a mechanical focus?

Question by : How big of a difference will I see on a servo focus vs a mechanical focus?
I’m currently weighing my options of buying either the Sony NX5 or the EX1R. I’d be making short films and eventually saving up to buy another to cover weddings / small events to offset the cost. I’m leaning towards the NX5 despite the smaller sensors for the factors of price and time code support (plus SSD options). However I was wondering what type of difficulties of using a servo focus versus a mechanical focus are going to come up? Will this be something I will regret doing later, or are most of the people on line over dramatizing the whole issue?

ALSO: For bonus points, is there anything else you’d think I should go with the EX1 vs the NX5 over feature wise?

Focus Tip – Turn off any auto function your camcorder has. Turn camera on. ZOOM all the way out. Find something far away to focus on ( I shoot weddings, in dance hall I will use fire escape sign on far wall) focus on this item, then return zoom to no zoom point. Your camera is now in focus, at any zoom, and can maintain focus on anything between the camera and what you focused on before.
You can focus your camera out doors to something several hundred feet away, take your camera indoors, as long as focus is not played with or camera turned off, you would have complete focus in that house at any zoom.

Can I make a time-lapse video with an HD video camera?

Question by : Can I make a time-lapse video with an HD video camera?
I’m a film student. We generally use the Canon Vixia S200 or the Sony EX1R. Very good cameras. I’m really interested in time-lapse videos and I know that they’re generally done with DSLRs through still photography. Could I use, say, the EX1R, shoot a static shot, put it into Final Cut Pro and speed it up A LOT? If not, how would I go about making a time lapse video with my HD cam and FCP?

Two ways.

1) Every 5 minutes, capture a still. One still = one frame. Put all the stills together in order. Remember, NTSC standard is 30 frames per second. Sony still has their “Interval Recording” in some upper end consumer camcorders. Read the manual to see if your EX1R does.

2) With either camcorder, record at normal speed. Import to Final Cut. Speed up the video. Final Cut can speed up way more in a single pass than iMovie – but if it is not enough, just export the project at best quality, then import that and speed it up… I used this method to condense an 8 hour drive from Southern California to Northern California down to about 7 minutes.

You did not tell us which version FCP or what speeding up “a lot” means… With the clip you want to speed up in the timeline selected, under “Modify” select “speed”… adjust as required. I used this method to condense a 10 minute part of chopping stuff (cooking video) to about 9 seconds…

Question by : Can someone give me advice on HD camcorders for feature filmmaking?
I’m a novice independent filmmaker getting ready to complete my first horror movie script, and I need advice on a quality HD camcorder to shoot the movie. My budget is around 8K for the camcorder and need for it to handle fight scenes and at least one car chase. In other words, lots of fast paced action needs to be captured on video. Any suggestions would be helpful. I’ve heard the Sony EX1R is a good choice and also the new JVC 250U might be a good choice, but i’m open for suggestions.
